On the 24th of May 2023, a groundbreaking dig took place on Europe’s largest electrofuel facility FlagshipONE, in the Swedish city Örnsköldsvik. This marks the start of construction of the facility and is also the first step towards a new green era in shipping, accounting for around 3% of global emissions today. FlagshipONE is owned by Ørsted who in November 2022 acquired the entire project from Liquid Wind.
FlagshipONE will be connected to Övik Energi’s combined heat and power (CHP) plant Hörneborgsverket. In the facility carbon dioxide will be upcycled and combined with green hydrogen, produced from renewable electricity and water to generate green electrofuel. When FlagshipONE enters operations in 2025 it will produce around 50,000 tonnes of electrofuel yearly, directly contributing to decarbonization of the shipping industry.
This provides an important steppingstone towards a new era in shipping where large-scale electrofuel production facilities will
supply a steadily growing fleet of electrofuel-powered vessels.

With Swedish and international partners, Liquid Wind continues to develop a network of electrofuel plants. The next plant will be built in Sundsvall, and three more plants are soon planned for the Nordic Region, including Sweden. Together these plants will account for at least 300,000 tonnes of green electrofuel.
”It is no coincidence that many of Liquid Wind’s initial projects are planned for Sweden, because of the country’s large wind power potential combined with large-scale availability of biogenic carbon dioxide. This makes Sweden a very

The shipping industry must move fast due to EU regulations on fossil fuel in harbors, and they have not been moving very fast lately. 11 billion tonnes of cargo are moved annually in more than 800 million containers. The world’s shipping industry uses 300 million tonnes of fossil fuel per year resulting in approximately 940 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually. 99.9% of the world’s marine fuels are currently of fossil origin. There is just no time to lose. Sea vessel engines are especially well aligned to eMethanol as marine fuel.
FlagshipONE is located on the grounds of the biomass-fired combined heat and power plant Hörneborgsverket in Örnsköldsvik, operated by Övik Energi. The eMethanol from FlagshipONE will be produced using renewable electricity and biogenic carbon dioxide captured from Hörneborgsverket. In addition, FlagshipONE will use steam, process water, and cooling water from Hörneborgsverket, and excess heat from the eMethanol production process will be delivered back to Övik Energi and integrated into their district heating supply. The facility will become Europe’s largest production site for green e-fuel, producing 50,000 tonnes of eMethanol annually. Liquid Wind’s second plant is projected with Sundsvall Energi and located at Korstaverket’s area in Sundsvall close to the harbor Tunadal. A third plant with Umeå Energi at Dåva kraftvärmeverk also close to a harbor will be able to produce 100,000 tonnes fossil free e-fuel annually.
Liquid Wind has a goal of reaching Financial Investment Decision (FID) for 10 projects by 2026. Headquartered in Gothenburg, Sweden and with a presence in Denmark, Finland and the UK, Liquid Wind has approx. 40employees.
