Azelio

Long-duration energy storage for supply of affordable clean power 24h

Azelio has a solution to extend the use of renewable power for when and where it is needed. Through the unique long-duration energy storage technology, renewable energy from solar and wind is stored as heat at 600 degrees Celsius in recycled aluminum. The heat is dispatched on demand to a Stirling engine, generating electricity and heat on demand with zero emissions and to a low cost at all hours of the day.

Azelio aims to increase access to clean power from intermittent sources as solar and wind, replacing diesel as a distributed renewable baseload and accelerate the global renewable transition.

The unique solution is scalable and competitive from 0.1 to 100 MW, supplying clean power around the clock at a much lower cost that batteries. A recent LCA study from RISE Institute also shows that Azelio’s energy storage has significantly lower environmental impact than both batteries and diesel generators.

Started in 2008, Azelio had its initial focus on clean power from gas applications, with close to 200 installations globally. The solution was further developed with focus on solar energy and to include storage. The storage technology was publicly demonstrated in 2018, followed by a vast interest and requests from potential customers to an order value of SEK 170 billion. By the end of 2019, Azelio completed installations of verification projects in Sweden and Morocco. The system in Morocco was inaugurated in early 2020 together with Azelio’s partner Masen (Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy), in the presence of representatives from the World Bank, Government representatives from Sweden and several African countries as well as UNIDO and IFC. Up until today, Azelio has signed a total of 14 Memorandums of Understanding at a total of 426 MW until 2025 with customers in target regions across the world.

Azelio currently has an installation ongoing in Abu Dhabi together with Khalifa University and Masdar, with the purpose of evaluating the technology to be included in Masdar’s product portfolio. As Azelio verified its system performance in late 2020, a major milestone was reached when the first commercial contract was signed with Dubai-based Alec Energy, part Alec Engineering and the Investment Corporation of Dubai (ICD), for an installation at one of the world’s largest solar parks, MBR solar complex. Azelio’s storage will be part of a mini grid system for a visitor center, taking the role as a renewable baseload, complementing the faster and short-term abilities of batteries.

The company stems from a strong heritage of high-tech engineering with access to the most advanced material suppliers and engineering centers of excellence in Northern Europe. The headquarter is in Gothenburg, Sweden, with production in Volvo cars former facilities, located in the heart of the automotive and aerospace clusters on the west-coast of Sweden. Azelio’s production is prepared and serial production will start in Q3 of 2021.
